Day 3: Suspense
It can be hard these days to branch out and try new movies. I think I've seen so many movies over the years that it takes something special to truly impress me. Movies have held a special place in my heart and in my life since I was a kid and my parents brought home that first VHS. The movie was the 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 at the time. I was all in. This movie was just a rental. I think a gas station rental? There was this small gas station as you left Dickinson that I'm confident my parents rented from. I'm going off memory here, as I was just a kid! The first VHS my family actually owned was Beauty and the Beast. This animated gem was one we watched over and over throughout our childhood--although I would fast-forward through many of the songs, such as "Be Our Guest." No thank you. My teenage years is when I really, really go into movies. They became the best part of a Friday night growing up on the farm.
My point here is that I've seen a lot of movies. Over the past few years, I've been reluctant to watch one I haven't seen before, however. My reservations stem from being disappointed lately with the way movies tend to look. I like my characters and my sets real. That's just me. Don't give me fake. I have even started preferring the theater because there I know the actors and sets are real.
Last night my wife and I took a risk and watched a new horror movie as part of October tradition, Heretic. We were quickly hooked. While there may be a portion of the film where we felt disconnected because of some less-than-real depictions, the plot and dialogue was enough to keep us engaged throughout. It draws a positive review in this post.
I love movies that make me think about larger issues, and this one certainly prompted me to think about the role that religion plays in my life. A lifelong Catholic, this movie gave me something new to think about the next time I'm in Church. I like that. Subjects that make me ponder my faith more deeply are subjects I have respect for. Well done horror movie #3.
